Ranging in size from intimate to immense, Chae‘s palette also caroms from light, bright fluorescents to muted, muddy earth tones. Oftentimes wrinkled paint skins are preserved alongside coffee stains on raw canvas or graphite dust captured in wet paint. Her work rejects the niceties of surface finish, pulsing instead with a rawer, more misfit gestural abstraction.
When she does employ shapes, they’re shape shifting; they hesitantly interlock (Untitled), un-resolutely overlap (Allusion, Delusion and Hay Tracker), or rest within a skewed symmetry (Mirroring). Typically, they’re pinned underneath a puckering layer of thickly applied, opaque paint or floating on top of a filmy haze of thin wash. And as often as Chae deliberately abnegates her own efforts, she just as often holds forth.
