Stephen Eichhorn: Flowers
@ ebersmoore
213 N Morgan St, 3C, Chicago, IL 60607
Opening Friday, February 25th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Saturday, April 2nd
Chicago-based artist Stephen Eichhorn creates delicate hand cut paper collages from reproductions of foliageâpalm fronds, grasses, leaves and flowers. Portions of the work exist in a cosmic space. While the images are of pieces of the natural world, they are composed in an entirely fictitious black or white void. The intense layering of finely cut florals are architecturally structured into ritualistic wreaths or floral arrangements, yet surprisingly they embrace a simple elegance from their origins.
From an essay for the exhibition by Joe Jeffers, the work is described as âadapting fragments of pictoral flora, Stephen Eichhorn sets hybridized species back into the ecology of picture-making. There are people who pollinate these pictures, people for whom the pictures will seemingly evolve. Visitors to Eichhornâs Flowers will be delighted to find that in some cases these variations are not arbitrary, but rather parallel to the forces of nature.â
