a twist and a little stuffing and your best jacket—the pride of your collection—doggy bed. “few do not get a dog’s life.” for some reason, this kind of debasement or conversion from high to low is the sweetest gesture.

shirts in the closet back you can’t throw out. never returned them to your ex, so they grayed and stretched, bulging with the flux of winter air. inside are a book and some herbs you couldn’t bear to extract, for they cut a hole in your stomach when you see them.

back from a storm, a sweater wets the closet floor, hung with socks outoftheway. wet feet drying. and seeing things suddenly autonomous is cute, but sad: they don’t need you! the socks spring (no longer really “your” “socks”) through the room, possessed by air and stiffed. to shine, jewelry needs to be a little dirty—glisten, sheen, and slick.

they’re not paintings of coats, but they’re not coats. some people wear coats like a second skin and liken paintings, by proxy, to flesh.

late is a november past its time, hit saturation. the crispest things in Late November are the memories. as they encroach, we’ve clung to cozy things like a nice pair of socks and a sweater. can you wear a memory like a coat?
