Stuart & Co. Gallery is pleased to announce an inaugural exhibition, Time If Place Innumerable, with an opening reception to be held Saturday, July 18th, 2015. Featuring the work of Shaina Lund, the exhibit delves into questions of objects and material in time while inviting the viewer to assess contemporary relationships to time and location. Interests in time keeping, the physics of time, and time travel have led Lund to develop a presentation which directly correlates to the artist’s understanding that the perception of time is activated at a material and atomically local level. Lund does so by integrating her interests in sunlight, ceramic materials, photography, drawing and an exploration of the essence of time to challenge the understanding of the individual’s singular relationship to these concepts.

“When we think of time travel, most are interested in a retrograde time travel–what we know as going back in time. This kind of travel goes against the laws of physics, but in a way memory becomes retrograde time travel. In memory, we can go back to sensations and thoughts of past moments in our life, and objects certainly play a role in that transportation,” Lund explains. These notions were the impetus for three pieces, Midsummer to First Snow, Winter’s End and Verdant, or Maybe Springtime. Lund crafted ceramic boxes to house collections of found objects that substantiate her belief that objects become markers of moments or seasons in one’s life. These serve as access points for memory and have significant ties to how one perceives time moving around them.

Lund’s keen focus on physics plays into both a fascination with the notion of problem solving in the scientific field and the idea of its limitations. “The outer limits of theoretical physics are where we witness the break down of science, inviting poetic rather than analytical solutions,” Lund states. Her video installations, of which Breezeway, A Morning Framed and Waving are featured in Time If Place Innumerable, further articulate these musings. Constructed with extreme consideration of these ideologies, Lund finds innovative ways to present how the effects of light, time, and space collaborate.

While the character of Lund’s work brings form to patterns uncovered, she additionally initiates time-based processes in their natural state. In Firmament, a two-part installation dedicated to ceramic movement and its organic dissolution, Lund provides the audience with a conceptual understanding of a physical practice. In contrast and in abundance, Lund presents meticulously accurate time-drawings dedicated to exploring her personal perception of time and the physicality that reveals the tactility of its existence by documenting the movement of light beams. These works solidify her philosophies of the inseparability of time and space.

Lund received her MFA in Ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014. Her academic and artistic practices have received numerous distinctions through nominations, awards and scholarships, and Stuart & Co. Gallery is pleased to present her work on display.

“We at Stuart & Co. Gallery are enthusiastic to begin our program of Chicago exhibitions with Shaina Lund and her unique artistic practice that melds science, poetry, and visual performance. We have worked hand in hand with Shaina to exemplify her vision as an artist and are sincerely excited by the results. It is with pleasure that we invite others to experience her time-based systems,” proprietor Christopher Stuart says.
