Kamilah Jones: Hard Decora

Elephant Room is excited to present a pop-up event featuring Hard Decora, an illustration brand by Kamilah Jones that explores a hardcore twist on girlishness, telling the story of a Harajuku girl gang protecting the freedoms of girlhood through original art, prints, and other merchandise. Hard Decora’s style is inspired by the Japanese fashion Kawaii Decora, where participants style themselves in colorful outfits topped with an extraordinary amount of “cute” accessories. Through her brand, Kamilah aims to give “girlishness” the respect it deserves and inspire girls from all cultural backgrounds to embrace the strength of their female voice. These girls are kawaii and they are not taking any BS.
The pop up will be two days only, opening Friday, July 10th with open hours from 3pm to 8pm and additional hours on Saturday, July 11th from 11am to 5pm. About Kamilah Jones
My love of art started as it does for most in the art community, in childhood. My love for art was so deep that even the mere thought of having to share my most prized possessions, my crayons, was just too much for me. As I and my passion for art grew, I knew that the next step for me was to set off for art school and incorporate my love of Japanese fashion and comics into my art making. I really had an artistic defining moment during my final semester of school and through two internships I held at Marvel. Black lines, apparel design and bold colors were my calling. From that epiphany, I developed my current brand: Hard Decora.
During my education, I jumped around a lot; one semester at SAIC, a year and a half at Memphis College of Art, two years at Columbia College Chicago, graduation with a degree in Illustration.
My personal mission is to act on every creative pulse in mind that I can. When I have a story in my head I think about it compulsively. Now that my skills are to a level where I can illustrate these ideas, my focus is on completing each and every one. I want to put my tangible pieces of imagination out there so others might also share in my obsession. I don’t wish for fortune, I wish to build a fandom.
