Join us for our Opening Reception of BLACKSUN. The exhibit will be on display at Outhouse from Friday, March 6th – Sunday, March 22nd.
BLACKSUN is the inaugural exhibition of Chris White, a Manhattan based artist. Integrating monumental black and white photographs with a video installation, White transforms the gallery space into an infinite, mystic summer of broken moralities. Within these images, young Americans are set into tableaus that mimic the figural compositions of Botticelli. The subjects, vulnerable to overindulgence, remain potent in allegory.
Leaving nothing to chance, White demonstrates his ability to direct and compose his subjects in supposedly spontaneous scenes. Here, the subjects become actors willingly staged within White’s personal narrative of adolescence and sexuality. On these intimate grounds, his story and process intersect, permitting the artist to engage in playfulness with an explicit sense of direction.
White’s career in photography and set design is directly aligned with his studio practice. His Sculptural and installation-based works are inspired by this past experience. White will respond, in the same manner, to the walls of the gallery, finalizing a multi-dimensional narrative. Enclosed in a white monolith structure, the sounds of revelry and boat engines run simultaneously as an image displays on the rippling surface of water. These qualities prove their capacity to invoke nostalgia while the environment simulates the slowing and reexamining of time.
Materials and works will be transported from Manhattan and constructed in the week prior to the opening.
