Pedro Cabrita Reis
@ The Arts Club of Chicago
201 East Ontario Street, Chicago, Illinois 60611
Opening Wednesday, February 18th, from 6 PM - 7 PM
On view through Saturday, May 9th
For The Arts Club, Cabrita Reis takes up the spaces and legacy of Mies van der Rohe, whose staircase sits at the core of the current building, designed by John Vinci in 1997. Cabrita Reis employs a combination of previously existing “tape drawings,” as well as newly purchased industrial and domestic building materials to transform The Arts Club galleries into an immersive experience. With aluminum tubing, fluorescent lighting, electrical wiring, and Plexiglas, Cabrita Reis constructs his installation in situ, working spontaneously with the physical and emotional character of the place, as well as his own poetic impulses. Interpreting the character of The Arts Club’s building, he sites a schematic for an imagined staircase in one gallery, and a repeating glass façade in the other.
Open installation days on Monday and Tuesday, February 16 and February 17, from 11:00 – 3:00 pm.
Public gallery opening at 6:00 pm on Wednesday February 18.
