Threewalls is pleased to present Double Cherry, a group exhibition and concurrent symposium by artists affiliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The project is the culmination of a class titled “The Field of Pleasure,” taught by Threewalls’ Executive Director Shannon Stratton. Double Cherry reflects a cross-disciplinary effort to refine individual conceptions of pleasure as theoretical categories that can be applied to personal practice. The exhibition is curated by Katie Vota, Jonathan Kusnerek, Megan Cline, Abbey Muzatko, and Meredith Donnelly.
The opening reception will feature a performance of MOUTHY WOMEN in Little Plates Nankin and Only Friend, as well as performances by Mel Boulom and Jake Vogds. The symposium on the following afternoon will include artist talks by Jonathan Kusnerek and Kelly Lloyd, as well as a presentation by Lauren Marie Johnson.
Because pleasure consumes time and labor, the experience of pleasure can pit the individual against the ultra-productive ideal of contemporary society. This exhibition is conceived as an experiment in excess, gluttony, and release. Double Cherry re-imagines the temporal experience of a gallery space as a threshold for individual and collective pleasure, an escape from the quotidian suppression of pleasure in an immersive and transcendent atmosphere.
Double Cherry generally addresses a visual theory of pleasure, but also includes work that engages the experience of food (consuming), libation (altered states, liminality), and celebration (ritual). The symposium at Threewalls also explores pleasure as a critical tool that can elucidate significance and validate the experience of perception and affect.
