Opening Tuesday, November 9th, at 6PM
South African visual artist Nandipha Mntambo had childhood dreams of becoming a forensic pathologist. This preoccupation with the body came to shape her artistic practice and, in 2004 with Idle, she began creating haunting sculptures cast out of cowhide. These feminine body forms (usually her own) appear flowing and supple; taken as a series they are a provocative inquiry into both gender and culture. Her later work has examined these same issues in different media including bronze, video, and photography. Join Mntambo and CHF Artistic Director Lawrence Weschler for this conversation. This year’s Chicago Humanities Festival explores the theme of the body.
