Oct 2nd 2014

Join us in the gallery for an artist talk by SOLO artist Carol Jackson. For her Threewalls exhibition, Jackson has created a twisted papier-maché assemblage–installed on the gallery wall–that looks to Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, and examines America’s fascination with the automobile. Part crash site and part marquee, the piece houses embedded hieroglyphic messages that only Satan can read.

Jackson’s talk will be followed by a live interpretative performance of the soundtrack from the 1973 Clint Eastwood film High Plains Drifter by Chicago-based guitarists and composers Sam Wagster and Bill McKay.

Carol Jackson received her MFA in 1992 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she now teaches. Her recent exhibitions include the 2014 Whitney Biennial, curated by Anthony Elms (New York); Monique Meloche Gallery (Chicago); Kunsthaus Speckstrasse (Hamburg); Chicago Cultural Center; Van Abbe Museum (Eindhoven, Netherlands); and The Smart Museum of Art (Chicago), among others.

Chicago-based guitarist and composer Sam Wagster has recorded and toured with The Cairo Gang, AZITA, The Singleman Affair, The Pillowhammer, and Fruit Bats. He has written music for numerous film and documentary projects and also writes songs and sings in the band The Father Costume.

Bill MacKay is a Chicago guitarist, composer and improviser who has worked extensively in folk, experimental rock, and improvised jazz. He works as a solo artist; performs with his group Darts & Arrows; and maintains ongoing collaborations with Katinka Kleijn, LeRoy Bach, Ben Boye, Renee Baker, Matt Lux, and Charles Rumback, among other musicians. He is also a writer and a long-time student of language. He is intrigued by the connections between these studies and music-making, and the evolving arc from the traditional to the avant-garde.
