“The dark nights gave me my dark eyes; I, however, use them to look for light.” – Gu Cheng (Chinese Modernist Poet, 1956 – 1993)
Hyperlink announces artist Xi Zhang for Samples, his first official solo exhibition at the gallery. Samples connects six of Xi Zhang’s ongoing bodies of work, ones that reflect on hyperrealisim, nihilism and existentialism, the undertones for his current practice. Born in 1984 in Kaifeng, China, Xi Zhang has become one of the most celebrated artists to emerge in Colorado, where he began sharing his paintings in 2004. This exhibition is his first solo effort in Chicago since last year’s elaborate undertaking “21st Century DNA,” presented by the City of Denver in conjunction with Plus Gallery at the McNichols Civic Center Building, following his selection by the Denver Biennial of the Americas to represent the United States at the URRA artist residency program in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
