Opening Friday, June 6th, from 5PM - 8PM
On view through Saturday, July 26th
Paris London Hong Kong is pleased to present Always, a solo exhibition of new works by Nicholas Gottlund.
Nicholas Gottlund’s relationship with printing is a rich and personal history dating back six generations. Considering, Gottlund’s exhibition title Always which comes from a previous book the artist made called Printing Always Printing could not be more apt. In Printing Always Printing Gottlund experiments with crops and enlargements of a book called Farming Always Farming that his family printed in the early 80’s for the Pennsylvania German Society. The large 40”x30” and 60”x45” silkscreen prints in the exhibition are further crops and enlargements of those selections in Printing Always Printing. The works are printed on tan Bristol board that is commonly used to make archival storage boxes for libraries, which Gottlund did for a summer job while working at his college’s library.
The most recent works in the exhibition are a group of 4”x72” aluminum strips that are wrapped in multiple sections of colored book cloth. Gottlund calls these works Spanners and he hangs them 24” high along the gallery walls below the large black and white silkscreen prints. The Spanners sit on the surface of the wall akin to the way color bars sit on the surface of an offset print. They occupy a space that can be seen but is considered outside of the margins of the works or architectural elements of the wall. The works in this exhibition further explore his deep history and relationship with printing which he first discovered with his family, later his college experience, and now his experience as an independent book publisher.
Nicholas Gottlund is a sixth generation printer. In 2007 he started the publishing project GottlundVerlag, which produces limited edition artist books and multiples by hand. His own artistic practice is deeply informed by his work and family history in printing and publishing. Gottlund has exhibited nationally and internationally, at spaces including the FOAM Photography Museum in Amsterdam; Temple Gallery in Paris; Karma in New York; and the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore, among others. His work is held in numerous private collections as well as the public collections of the MoMA Library, Whitney Museum Library, the FOAM Photography Museum as well as the Baltimore Museum of Art. Upcoming projects include a group show at Signal in Brooklyn, and a lecture at the Tokyo Art Book Fair. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
An interview by Andrew Januszak accompanies the exhibition.
