Alejandro Cesarco
@ The Art Institute of Chicago
111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603
Opening Thursday, October 22nd, from 6PM - 7:30PM
Alejandro Cesarco‘s work utilizes the processes and strategies of conceptual art in a self-conscious exploration of narrative, influence, translation, and reception. Drawing from art history, popular culture, and literature, his comprehensive practice encompasses various media with language and text taking center stage. Index, for example, is a series of c-prints depicting index pages from a hypothetical book with entries and corresponding page numbers referring to a range of cultural figures including Lucy Lippard, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Frank Zappa. In 2006, John Baldessari chose to work with Cesarco as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative Award. Over the course of one year, they produced a collaborative body of work entitled Retrospective, a series of silkscreens of scanned book pages in which solid blocks of color, revealing only select footnote numbers, replace the text. The corresponding notes, selected and written by Cesarco, appear at the bottom of the page, followed by Baldessari’s responses.
