A recent MFA graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Timothy Bergstrom creates paintings that mix cartoon figures, vernacular images and texts in a way that encourage the works’ dissonance. This intentional mix of low brow elements with traditional high painting applications and expectations complicates the work and disrupts any easy interpretation. An exploration of materials has driven much of the development of his practice. Tension is created through his synthesis of various media and visual languages.
