“Hey listen, I’m more than a fool,
you don’t even have to buy me presents,
we don’t have to kiss,
you don’t even have to mention filthy sweet things,
I’ll pay for your drugs,
hey, I’ll even buy you a sex-date,
but please keep me near you,
’cause people like you make me sick.”
– Lyrics by Nervous Gender

For 3433’s latest exhibition, Second Primary, Macon Reed and Daniel Luedtke present works that are attracted toward processes of collecting a life of intersectional political histories and coded behaviors of sex, form, color and performative intimacies. Luedtke’s pictorial objects and Reed’s gouache drawings-sculptures suture a connection between formal abstraction and recognitions of difference. These incomplete and additive series are concerned with the accrual of meaning from disparate bodies, discarded modernisms, and incomplete sources within a lateral and sequential viewing.
Daniel Luedtke lives, labors and loves in Chicago and makes art between several mediums such as drawing, sculpture, video and music. He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute in 2013 and has exhibited work nationally and internationally in spaces such the Walker Art Center – Minneapolis, Devening Projects – Chicago, the Tom of Finland Foundation – Los Angeles, Sue Scott Gallery – New York and NP3 Gallery – Netherlands.
Macon Reed’s current studio-based work uses spectacle and humor to examine the lines between transformation and failure, trauma and healing, playfulness and escapism. She received her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2013 and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. She works in sculpture, drawing, radio documentary and performance. She has exhibited and performed with Dah Theatre in Belgrade, the Kitchen and ABC No Rio in New York, the Salt Institute for Documentary studies in Portland, Maine, and recently in The (W)holy Grail exhibition curated by Tricia Van Eck in conjunction with Chicago Artist’s Month.
Second Primary opens at 3433 from November 16 through December 7. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 16, 6:00-9:00
