Corbett vs. Dempsey is pleased to announce “Left / Right,” an exhibition of new works by Peter Brötzmann. In his third solo show at Corbett vs. Dempsey, the German artist and musician presents a group of drawings made with both hands, as well as box assemblages made since 2011. The ambidextrous drawingsâlandscapes, still lives, portraits of one hand composed by the other â are often executed with both hands simultaneously, the mirror image including a text description, also going opposite directions. Delicate, intimate works, they possess a palpable vulnerability, recalling the methods of Dieter Roth and the simplicity of Emil Nolde. Brötzmann has been constructing box works since the 1960s; the most recent ones have a renewed power and unusually vivid colors, perhaps suggesting a more optimistic outlook, or at least a sunny moment. Wood, metal, fabricâbasic materials assembled into wondrous miniature worlds.
Brötzmann’s work is currently the subject of a major survey at the International Center of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. A full-color, 48-page catalog, with an essay by Jim Dempsey, accompanies the exhibition.
