Chicago-based artist José Lerma is known for his humorous paintings of historical figures such as European aristocrats who rise to power before falling from grace or infantile kings who evoke both the heroic and the pathetic. For the artist’s BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago, Lerma presents his large-scale “keyboard paintings” which are leaned against the gallery wall and propped up on either side by a book and an electric keyboard. The pressure of the canvas against the keyboard produces the note D minor, adding an anticlimactic soundtrack to the painting as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the metaphoric weight of the history of painting on contemporary artists. The theatrical exhibition also includes paper bust sculptures, a carpet painting, and a gallery-sized retro-reflective curtain installation. The BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works exhibition series showcases the best new work being made in Chicago, regardless of the status of the artist’s career—whether emerging or established, mid-career or undergoing reinvention. The exhibition is organized by Kristin Korolowicz, MCA Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow.
