Joan Mitchell Exhibit Open Through May 31 at the Poetry Foundation
Today through May 31, the Poetry Foundation is hosting an exhibit of abstract expressionist painter Joan Mitchell (1925-1992). Born and raised in Chicago, Mitchell used poetry to guide her artwork. Her mother, Marion Strobel, was an associate editor at Poetry magazine; her daughter inherited her passion for poetry.
The exhibition features the large-scale painting Minnesota (1980), as well as photographs, illustrations, letters and books of poems inspired by Mitchell’s relationships with poets, including her mother, Frank O’Hara, Bill Berkson, John Ashbery, and Nathan Kernan.
This exhibit is unique in its display of multiple artist mediums and explores the life of Joan Mitchell throughout her career. Patrons and school groups are welcome to visit the exhibit weekdays, 11am – 4pm. School groups interested in touring the exhibition should contact library@poetryfoundation.org.
