The Artist’s Life: Edgar Arceneaux in conversation with Sabina Ott

The Artist’s Life Series engages a diverse range of artists, at different stages in their careers, in an intimate dialogue about their personal and professional paths. The conversations will examine a variety of topics as they reveal the individual artists’ stories. Questions may include: What were turning points in your life and how did they influence your creative practice? What helps to sustain the creative energy needed to engage as an artist? What role does the origin of your work have in its presentation?

Each of The Artist’s Life conversations will include opportunities for the audience to engage in a dialogue with the artist in discussion. These talks present unique moment for reflection on an artist’s creative process and formative journey.

Edgar Arceneaux, (b. 1972) is a graduate of Art Center College of Design (BFA, 1996) and the California Institute for the Arts (MFA, 2001). Arceneaux’s work has been the subject of exhibitions at Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel, Switzerland, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, MI; REDCAT, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Linz, Austria; San Francisco Museum of Contemporary Art; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; and the Studio Museum Harlem, New York. He has also been a featured artist at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Art, Oslo, Norway; San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art; the Bronx Museum, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Arceneaux was featured in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. The artist’s work resides in many public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; The Ludwig Museum, Cologne, Germany; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Orange County Museum of Art, CA, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He is represented by Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects and Galerie Praz Delavallade. Edgar Arceneaux currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Sabina Ott’s work merges painting, sculpture, digital media and installation. She defamiliarizes the material world, deploying banal, domestic commodities including lamps, tables, and houseplants, converting them into the raw materials out of which she constructs strange, uneasy re or de-purposed art objects that hint at yet resist intended usage. Her work has been shown internationally in venues such as the first Auckland Triennial in Auckland New Zealand; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; the Australian Contemporary Arts Center in Melbourne, Australia; the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, MO. Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; The Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri among others. She recently completed a Chicago Transit Authority commission for the city of Chicago’s Red Line Station. Currently, Ott serves on the Board of Directors of the College Art Association. She operates a project space, Terrain Exhibitions, in the front yard of her home/studio in Oak Park, IL and is a Professor of Art at Columbia College Chicago.
