The Student Union Galleries (SUGs) is pleased to present Pile Hunk Stage, opening Tuesday, January 29 at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Gallery X. Featuring the work of artists Cody Tumblin (BFA 2013) and Kayl Parker (BFA 2013), the exhibition explores the process of making an image, delivering an aesthetic experience of the artist’s work.
In Pile Hunk Stage, flattened space, solid color, and simple compositions force an interpretation of objects through a formalized lens. Photographic and two-dimensional works reveal the illusion of surface, exposing props posing as still lifes and casually painted gestures humorously imbued with emotion. Acting more as “products” than “figures,” subjects exist as static objects within the variability of formal situations.
Through disparate mediums and forms, both Parker and Tumblin treat their work as an accumulation of reference and association, whether deconstructed and abstracted, or displayed in the form of a prop, riffing on nostalgia and personal projections. While Parker explores the viewer’s personal associations to commonplace objects, Tumblin examines aesthetic problems—contemplating abstract images as formalized deconstructions of the everyday. A similar strangeness resides in the imagery of both artists. Tension is heightened through the convergence of photographs and abstract drawings, offering uneasy, irresolute projections that sustain and mold the viewer’s experience.
