CHICAGO, IL — This Halloween, the scariest thing in the art world isn’t the monsters, the ghosts, or the paintings that stare back at you. It’s the price tags.
But not this Friday.
Chicago artist Allen Vandever invites you to THE PRICE IS FRIGHT!, a Halloween costume party and Pay-What-You-Can Art Show celebrating his favorite holiday with spooky art, strange creations, frighteningly good deals, treats, and a gallery full of wonderfully questionable characters.
On Friday, October 30, from 7 PM until midnight, Childhood Fractured’s Phygital Art Gallery will become a haunted playground of imagination featuring the work of Tully Bertorelli, Jason Davis, Allen Vandever, and David Hauptschein.
Expect monsters, strange creatures, dark humor, surreal visions, and artwork that may or may not follow you home.
And here’s the most terrifying twist of all:
YOU GET TO HELP DECIDE WHAT YOU PAY FOR ART!
That’s right. This is a Pay-What-You-Can Art Show. Whether your budget is $20, $200, or $2,000, the goal is to help great art find a home without making your bank account scream in horror.
Because original art shouldn’t be reserved for people with frighteningly large bank accounts.
COME FOR THE ART. STAY FOR THE FRIGHT.
Wear a costume. Become a monster. Dress as your favorite artist, a famous painting, a ghost, a ghoul, or that terrifying person who says, “I could make that myself.”
Enjoy great art, treats, interesting people, and a Halloween celebration with the sort of creative spirits you can actually have a conversation with.
Costumes are encouraged. Creativity is mandatory. Being normal is entirely optional.
BRING YOUR DEAD TOYS BACK TO LIFE!
This Halloween, we’re also inviting guests to bring the forgotten, broken, abandoned, and slightly disturbing objects hiding in their homes.
Instead of throwing them away, give them a second life as art!
BROKEN TOYS:
Old, strange, damaged, missing-a-leg, missing-a-head, loved-to-death toys. Dolls with no eyes, action figures with no arms, and stuffed animals that have seen things no stuffed animal should ever see. We can turn them into art.
OLD JACKETS & COATS:
That jacket you haven’t worn in ten years? That coat with a mysterious stain? Bring it! These forgotten garments can become hand-painted wearable masterpieces, extraordinary art projects, and entirely new creations.
UNUSED ART MATERIALS:
Paint, brushes, canvases, paper, markers, pencils, frames, wood, sculpture supplies, collage materials, and those mysterious art supplies sitting in the back of your closet waiting for destiny.
TURN YOUR JUNK INTO ART MONEY!
Bring eligible items and receive AV BUCKS, which you can use toward purchasing original artwork.
It’s creative recycling with a supernatural economic twist.
Your broken toys could help create the next masterpiece. Your old coat might become a painting someone wears to a party. And your forgotten art supplies might finally fulfill their artistic destiny.
DEAD TOYS. NEW ART. REAL VALUE.
A HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION WITH A PURPOSE
For Vandever, who has spent more than 27 years working as a full-time professional artist, Halloween is a celebration of everything art should be: imagination, transformation, mystery, theatricality, and the freedom to become something extraordinary.
“The beautiful thing about Halloween is that, for one night, everyone gets to become an artist. People create costumes, invent characters, transform themselves, and step outside their ordinary lives. That’s what art does every day. And if we’re going to be frightened by something, I’d rather it be a wonderful painting than the price of owning one.”
The show is also part of Vandever’s continuing effort to keep his independent Chicago art studio and gallery alive while making original art accessible to people at every income level.
The philosophy is simple:
Art deserves a home. Artists deserve to survive. And nobody should have to be rich to live with something extraordinary.
