LuLu en el Jardín is an experimental documentary film that details Benavides’s mother’s journey migrating from Mexico City to the West Side of Chicago during her adolescence in the 1970s. The film specifically explores her struggles with identity, the challenges of migration, and her subsequent forced institutionalization by her family at the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center after she came out as a lesbian.

A discussion with the filmmaker, Jose Luis Benavides (UIC Alumnus, CADA MFA; and current Assistant Professor at Idaho State University), will be part of the screening.

This program is part of the Gender and Sexuality Center’s “Queer & Trans Latine Liberation” theme in honor of the Latino Cultural Center’s 50th anniversary. The Latino Cultural Center is wheelchair accessible. For accommodations or questions, please email: Igbtqa@uic.edu
