Prominent Japanese feminist scholar and art historian Izumi Nakajima examines the three artists in the Inner Worlds exhibition through a postwar feminist lens. She considers the differences in feminist movements and art between Europe, Japan, and the United States and how this may have impacted the reception of the three artists’ work in New York as well as the decline of their visibility once they returned to their home countries.
Inner Worlds features the work of three trailblazing women artists who rose to international acclaim for their distinct approaches to perception and embodiment: Yayoi Kusama (1929–2026), Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002), and Mary Bauermeister (1934–2023).
