Related to the current exhibition, Inner Worlds: Visions from the Hirshhorn Collection, Matt Bodett, Director and Founder of the Center for Mad Culture, considers the rise of psychiatry alongside early modernism; the avant-garde’s fascination with visions, altered states, and “irrational” expression; and the reclaiming of mad art as culture, history, and knowledge rather than medical evidence or pathology.

Inner Worlds features the work of three trailblazing women artists who rose to international acclaim for their distinct approaches to perception and embodiment: Yayoi Kusama (1929–2026), Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002), and Mary Bauermeister (1934–2023).
