Flatline Gallery is pleased to present A Little Song in the Dark, a solo exhibition of recent oil paintings by Kevin Glass, on view October 23 through November 22, 2026.
Working through repetition, accumulation, and revision, Glass constructs densely layered paintings that move between order and disorder, structure and dissolution. Recurring circular forms gather into constellations, grids, and fields, suggesting everything from cellular structures and geological formations to ritual counting and the passage of time. Elsewhere, marks accumulate and disperse without an apparent organizing principle, revealing unexpected relationships between density, rhythm, and empty space.

The exhibition takes its title from philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s image of a child singing to establish a sense of order in the darkness. For Glass, painting becomes a similarly provisional act of construction: a means of finding form within uncertainty, even as that form remains subject to change.

Built through successive layers of pigment, scraping, covering, and interruption, the paintings retain the physical record of their making. Thick deposits of oil paint give way to exposed underlayers; repeated gestures produce subtle variations, accidents, and departures from their original systems. Rather than treating abstraction as the spontaneous expression of an interior state, Glass approaches painting as an ongoing negotiation between intention and material, allowing each decision to generate the conditions for the next.

A Little Song in the Dark brings together a body of work that considers how repetition produces difference, how structures emerge through accumulation, and how even the most ordered systems remain open to transformation.
