InΒ The Souls of Black Folk, W. E. B. Du Bois describes a condition of βintense ethical ferment, of religious heart-searching and intellectual unrest,β speaking to the dual existence of being both American and Black within a violent and contradictory world. This tension resonates with Leeβs work, where faith cannot simply be abandoned but must be understood as an inheritance wrought into the body and the imagination.
The title,Β A Thief in the Night, is drawn from a biblical phrase used to urge believers to repent and remain βright with the Lord.β For many, this warning creates a persistent sense of unease, fostering the belief that no amount of faithfulness is truly enough. Life becomes a race against time, a race that cannot be won. This fear brought Lee to a question: who is he to march to the gates of Heaven and demand that he be let in, anyway? The question is not only whether he deserves salvation, but why he was taught to understand his existence through βdeservingβ in the first place.
