Chicago-based conceptual artist and writer Evan Fusco presents a solo exhibition Minor Gestures and Grammatical Propositions, or One location of the lacunae in which sits the massive capacity for concurrent possibilities of this real: an incomplete field guide to particular subtexts of the magical as articulated in conversation with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s concept of Flesh that touches on the strange things that happen when objects, words, and ideas are allowed to mingle. Stones, dirt, color, text, and imagined instructions become starting points for stories and connections that aren’t always easy to explain. Rather than telling you what to think, these gestures leave room for curiosity, interpretation, and a little bit of magic.

“Gesturing wildly you find yourself engaged in a moment that can’t quite work itself out. Something tickles the back of your mind, an incomplete bridge, a faulty wire, an unfordable river: the gap that exists between the thing said and the thing heard. It is unremarked. Gestalt wins over.

What is that gap which exists in the language and the movements in the communication of the real?

Minor Gestures and Grammatical Propositions… is a gathering of magical and grammatical propositions. The slight differences in function of these two modifiers are themselves an incantative act in process.

These propositions are minor and gestural, invitational and imaginative. It is in the color and the dirt. Stones histories commingle with current socialities both dictating the very foundations of the propositions. Event scores read like fantasy read like museum didactics and like to be read.

Found in the lacunae between things, there is a buzzing and a rending which seeks to spill itself out if only to be found lacking in the substance needed to hold it. This is an experiment in the holding.” – Evan Fusco
