Live Narrative Painting: Artist Statement
A live narrative painting is a story or experience that I paint while narrating it. As I speak, the people, places, emotions, and events begin appearing on the canvas. The audience does not simply hear the story or see the finished artwork—they witness both being created together in real time.
The story guides the painting. A memory may become a figure, an emotion may become a color, and a turning point may completely transform the composition. The painting becomes a visual record of the experience, holding several moments in a single image.
After 27 years as a full-time artist, I am still fascinated by the challenge of translating life into paint. Live narrative painting allows me to combine painting, storytelling, memory, and performance. It reveals the decisions, accidents, risks, and discoveries that are normally hidden inside the creative process.
The finished painting matters, but it is only one part of the artwork. The complete piece includes the story, the performance, the audience, and the shared experience of watching a blank canvas slowly become a visual world.
