This is funny until you realize it isn’t.
Vandever has turned the humiliating economics of being an artist into the exhibition itself. The empty gallery, the unsold paintings, the desperate invitation disguised as rejection—these are not things happening outside the artwork. They are the artwork.
“Don’t buy my art” is both a joke and an accusation. It exposes an art world that celebrates artists symbolically while allowing them to disappear economically.
The show asks an uncomfortable question: If we say that art matters, when are we willing to prove it?
You do not have to buy a painting. But stop pretending that applause, compliments, likes, and exposure pay an artist’s rent.
Go see the show you were told not to attend. Look at the art you were warned not to buy. Then decide what your belief in art is actually worth.
