Please join us for presentations by the mother-daughter artists whose art works will be on display in the Loggia Gallery August 29 – October 29, 2026.

At this presentation, Florence Hawkins will share from her memoir “SOT”.
Daughter, Juarez, will present a reading from her essays around caregiving, followed by conversation with those gathered.

Florence Hawkins is a Chicago artist whose legacy is rooted in one of the most influential public art projects of the twentieth century—the 1967 Wall of Respect in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. As one of the artists who contributed to the groundbreaking mural, Hawkins participated in a collaborative effort of the Organization of Black American Culture (OBAC). Widely recognized as the first large-scale community mural in the United States, the Wall of Respect celebrated Black history, culture, and achievement while helping to launch the national community mural movement and the Black Arts Movement’s visual arts legacy.

Juarez Hawkins is an artist, educator and curator. She received her B.A. from Northwestern University, and her M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. Juarez added clay to her wheelhouse in 2006, when she began teaching at Chicago State University. Studying under Marva Jolly, she found the malleability of the medium well-suited to her ideas around identity, spirituality, and the body. Juarez has exhibited widely, including exhibitions at Bridgeport Art Center, the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, and the South Side Community Art Center. She is a member of Sapphire and Crystals, a collective of African American female artists.
