DMITRY SAMAROV: KMR/POTUS—public portraits & private figures

From the spring of 2025 through the summer of 2026, Samarov has been painting and drawing one woman nearly every week. She chooses the pose and the setting; he chooses the medium. The ten pieces on show present a survey of their work together.

A couple months after starting the KMR pictures, Samarov found a folder of presidential portraits created to celebrate the bicentennial in 1976. It felt like a no-brainer to enhance and improve these hideous depictions of horrible men in honor of the country’s semiquincentennial.

Together, these two bodies of work, made over the same period, present contrasting approaches to portraiture—one public and distanced, the other intimate and personal.
