Teen Exhibition: OFF THE WALL!
@ Hyde Park Art Center
5020 S Cornell Ave, Chicago, IL 60615
On view through Sunday, October 11th
Each year, Teen Programs provide a structured independence that encourages young artists to develop their creative voices, learn new skills, and build relationships in the context of a community art center, where artists of all ages and backgrounds do the same. The annual exhibition is a testament to these young artists’ evolution and dedication.
Throughout the year, teens have found new and unique ways to express themselves and discover their artistic voice. During this time, we have lived in a fractured version of the U.S. like none other in history. This climate affects the teens, their teachers, and the adults who support them. Teens often see the Hyde Park Art Center as a safe space, and their art reflects what truly represents them. OFF THE WALL! is both the celebration of their unique voice and a demand for change.
Through the work included in OFF THE WALL!, young artists seek to disrupt the expectations of our youth in our current society. Traditions most adults have been raised with have been broken down in front of the eyes of today’s youth, merely reflecting a broken mirror. Last year’s exhibition, So What Now? sought to make sense out of the overwhelming political and economic uncertainty. Therefore, where So, What Now? pondered on the future with curiosity and concern, OFF THE WALL! seeks to reject the climate we find ourselves in, and embraces radical change, with the concept emerging from themes and conversations amongst teens.
OFF THE WALL! is curated by Harley Reid, Teen Programs Coordinator and Tran Tran, Exhibitions & Residency Manager. Teen Programs are led by incredible teaching artists including: Cassidy Bennett of Youth Board of Artists, Jonathan Castillo and Kaitlyn Krueger of Studio Photo, Daniel Hud and Dillan Achaempong of Street Photography, Brian Sykes and Marlon King of ISPRO Academy, Juarez Hawkins and Ebere Agwuncha of Teen Ceramics, Rhonda Wheatley of Advanced Teen Track, and Sarita Garcia, Regin Igloria, and Aaron Becker of Pilot Programs. This exhibition could not have happened without these instructors’ dedication and care.
