New Gallery is excited to present Elizabeth Joo, our artist in residence for November!

What Remains After Night examines how personal experiences accumulate over time and within environments, and how these layers reappear through objects and space. The work looks at the traces that remain after anxiety has passed, the small repeated habits formed during sleepless nights. Used tea bags are collected, dried, and connected to reconstruct the space once shaped by restlessness. This process organizes emotion and reinterprets experience. Traces of daily life, tea bags, serve as mediators that record continuity and recovery. Between tension and relief, they reveal what remains after night through connection and accumulation.

Elizabeth Joo is a Chicago-based artist who transforms emotional experiences into sculptural and installation works through embroidery. Embroidery, which embraces stillness, serves as a resistance to emotional numbness, integrating complex emotions into her art and forging tangible connections between the abstract realm of emotions and the material world. She explores the interaction between emotions, personal memory, time, space, and existence. Her work focuses on reconstructing ways to process and release emotions through repetitive rituals of documentation and meditative, performative practices. She has exhibited in Seoul, Chicago, and New Canaan, and holds an MFA from SAIC (2023) and a BFA from Seoul Women’s University (2020).

Join us for the opening reception on Novemeber 14, from 6:30PM-8:30PM at Art City, 1400 N Halsted.
