Flor Flores: mirror moment: Artist Walk-Through

@ Ralph Arnold Gallery

1131 W Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL 60660

Opening Thursday, November 6th, from 6PM - 8PM

On view through Saturday, November 22nd

Join Flor Flores for a walkthrough of mirror moment. Moving through the exhibition with the artist, you’ll hear about the process behind the works and how Kiki, a queer monarch butterfly, has guided their making. The walkthrough will weave in performative and sensorial elements—gestures, presence, and attention to the body—that connect directly to the exhibition’s themes of touch, transformation, and reflection.

About the exhibition

“Kiki is a queer monarch butterfly, shaped by every touch. She brushes past petals and gathers color, shape, memory. These paintings follow her logic: touch is transformation. Over time, Kiki led Flor back to flowers, then to the body. A mirror moment—budding—body euphoria. Skin echoes petal, a flor de piel. It doesn’t explain—it reflects. Her gestures become a way of seeing, of feeling. Not a fixed self. Not arrival. Just bloom.”

-Flor Flores

Flor Flores: mirror moment is an exhibition of new and recent works by transdisciplinary artist and poet Flor Flores. The artist’s process of creating these paintings, drawings, sculptures, poems, and textile-based installations centers on a caring and poetic channeling of Kiki, a butterfly. The artist has recently lifted divisions previously existing between the multiple artforms, noting this was possible after “Kiki showed me the way”. Folding, holding, flapping, flitting, touching, and shifting are actions Flor has learned from the butterfly, creating a new playground for experimentation and transformation with their own shifting body and identities.

For years For has been channeling Kiki, a queer monarch butterfly, painting her memories of falling in love with flowers – becoming them through touch, each changing the other.

In a new series, Bodyworks, Flor uses their own body, pressing and smearing skin and lips into surfaces, lips mirror petals, the body itself shifting. Borrowing gestures from Kiki – touch, fold, press – these works open a playground for transformation. In between them lies the mirror moment, a space of queer joy where bodies change, touch, and reflect one another.
