Kaolinite Obstruction Exhibition Statement
Kaolinite Obstruction is a duo show featuring the works of Mack Baker & Avery Booth.
Avery Booth seeks to emulate the naturally disruptive ebb and flow of nature throughout her work. Avery works with a variety of materials which include plants, insects, rocks, mostly from her surrounding ecosystem. Her practice centers around an appreciation of how time and erosion affect the environment. Her sculptural assemblages demonstrate the inevitability of growth and decay.
Mack Baker is a ceramicist whose practice is concerned with the physics and aesthetics of the collapsed vessel. Their work encapsulates bodily intimacy and connection, using clay as a conduit of their sensuality. Mack’s process assesses the vulnerability of the clay body, testing the limits of the wheel thrown vessel to produce a collapse.
Avery considers how the landscape of nature inherently is a body whereas Mack considers the body to be a landscape within nature. In the moment where these works meet, there is a collision between natural growth and material collapse. These works reveal that our bodies are both static and dynamic entities within the natural world; a world determined to simultaneously evolve and destruct.
