SAMAZAMA: WORKS INSPIRED BY A TRIP TO JAPAN by SHAWN SMITH/SHAWNIMALS
@ THE SEVENTH CORNER GALLERY @ HOWLING PAGES
4354 N MILWAUKEE AVE, CHICAGO, IL 60641
Opening Friday, August 22nd, from 6PM - 9PM
Please join us for SAMAZAMA: new works by Shawn Smith aka Shawnimals, inspired by his recent trip to Japan.
Portage Park-based Smith is best known as the artist and designer behind Shawnimals and Ninjatown. His primary focus in recent years has been on pop-culture-inspired murals, fine art, and illustration, creating a wide variety of drawings, paintings, occasional sculptural works, live art, and public art—particularly his “shapes” which are featured in an animated commercial, billboards, trains, and buses for the Illinois Department of Human Services, Modelo’s traveling art-focused Custom Shop, and many walls across Chicagoland and beyond.
His character-based body of work explores ideas of memory, friendship, community, diversity, and inclusivity, showing a wide range of not only sizes, shapes, and colors, but also emotions and perspectives. Smith’s hope is that the work will be indicative of the support that true community can build. Simply put, he wants to delight and inspire people everywhere with his work.
He is also one of the owners of Seventh Corner Gallery
