Overhead Costs
@ SPACE.01
2334 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60622
Opening Wednesday, April 30th, from 6PM - 10PM
On April 30th, SPACE.01 will host Overhead Costs, a one-night exhibition exposing the financial, legal, and administrative pressures that undermine the operation of community-based art spaces in Chicago.
The show features archived footage from multiple raids by the 14th District CPD on SPACE.01, as well as documentation of the unlawful arrest of gallery founder Trejon D’Angelo on August 21, 2024. Through surveillance video, citations, and official correspondence, the exhibit lays out a pattern of over-policing, bureaucratic obstruction, and municipal neglect — not as isolated incidents, but as routine costs of doing public, creative work in this city.
These are no longer threats. They are line items:
– Repeated police presence at nonviolent art and community events
– Fines issued without consistent explanation or recourse
– Lack of communication, accountability, or transparency from city departments
– Legal consequences rooted in who is creating space, not what is happening inside it
Overhead Costs highlights the financial weight of keeping a space open — but to the surveillance, scrutiny, and structural violence that hover over any attempt to build something outside sanctioned systems.
