Remembering Tamir Rice: A Decade of Memorializing and Resilience

A day of community reflection and art-making in memory of Tamir Rice and others lost to state violence, honoring resilience and remembrance.
Ten years ago, on November 22, 2014, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was assassinated by a Cleveland police officer, who has since been rehired by another police department. In 2016, the gazebo near which Tamir was killed was slated for demolition and erasure. However, thanks to tireless determination, Tamir’s mother Samaria Rice rescued the material contents of the gazebo and entrusted them to artist and Rebuild’s Director Theaster Gates. Rebuild has since been the humble steward of this object of care, commissioning artists to reflect and engage with the memorial through the creation of new work in honor of Tamir and Ms. Rice’s prolific maternal resilience.
On Saturday, November 23, please join us, Ms. Rice and the University of Chicago’s Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture as we gather in tribute to Tamir and others affected by police violence through music, art-making and storytelling.
This event is dedicated to the memory of Tamir, fostering healing and honoring his legacy while providing a sacred gathering space for the ongoing commitment to justice and healing.
