Hidden Tales: A collaboration exhibition presented by the collective “Keepers of Heritage” and the NMPRAC

In 2017 an arts collective of Puerto Rican artists organized in Florida partnered with the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture to present the exhibition “La Diaspora.”

After visiting Chicago, the project evolved and grew stronger, embracing the challenge of documenting and showcasing the work of artists whose contribution remained out of the radar as it adopted the name of “Keepers of Heritage.”

The unique collection of artworks featured in “Hidden Tales” at the NMPRAC, is an updated edition of the exhibition presented by the collective under the same title in Creative Pinellas, Florida in 2023. This arrangement of artworks have been carefully articulated by curator/artist Yasir Nieves.

In essence “Hidden Tales” has gone beyond the pure intent of gathering the works of the featured artists sharing a common space. As their intent and purpose of collaboration matured, the discourse has become increasingly profound and soulful. It reflects how all their stories become one story. In the words of artist/curator Yasir Nieves the concept of the “Hidden Tales” becomes alive:

“The importance originates with the opportunity to expand boundaries, altered stigmas and tell stories. offering a diverse perspective, generating discomfort, conversion of ideas and experience. The chance to produce a platform for those overshadowed stories and story tellers, awarding a distinctive perspective, where the question is more important than the answer.”

The exhibition showcases around 40 artworks including paintings, engravings, drawings, digital photography, and sculptures of artists Domingo García Dávila, Brenda Cruz, Joan Emanuelli Sanchez, Martín García Rivera, Yasir Nieves, Gilbert Salinas, Rafael Rivera Rosa, Pablo Rubio, Ángel Rivera Morales, Juan Nieves Burgos, Francisco García Burgos, Carmelo Fontánez Cortijo, Michael Irrizary Pagán, Alejandro de Jesús, Stanley Coll, Luis Soto, Valentín Tirado Barreto, Carmen Rojas Ginés, José Feliciano, and Rigoberto Torres.

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture invites the community to enjoy this unique display of artistic excellence before its historical return to homeland Puerto Rico with the parallel exhibition “The Encounter of the Hidden Tales” whose opening at the Museum of the Americas in Old San Juan in September of 2024 will represent the closure of a chapter in the story of the project, and a one-of-a-kind collaboration with the NMPRAC.
