When sharing one’s story – a powerful and vulnerable act – the moment before sharing can directly impact how the story is told because it is defined by the storyteller themselves. But what does this preliminary step look like for you? Whether we are aware of it or not, we as people are constantly moving through our own “moments before.” How do we feel about where we are? Who are we with? What are we about to do? This workshop, The Moment Before, aims to explore what this preparatory work can consist of on an individual level, honoring first how we feel as humans and second how we wish to share our experiences as storytellers.

Participants will engage in breathwork, viewpoints, freewriting and other exercises that center the voice and body as tools to support the moment before the telling of one’s story. Participants will be encouraged to move within their comfort level, and we suggest wearing comfortable clothing and footwear. Light snacks and beverages provided.

Facilitated by Taylor Dalton (she/her) a mixed, queer performance artist from Chicago, IL. She has volunteered with Awakenings since 2015 and has collaborated with various storefront theaters, galleries, and artists throughout the city as a performer, producer, and designer.

This workshop is free with RSVP. All our workshops are open to survivors, loved ones, and anyone impacted by sexual violence. All genders welcome. Light snacks and beverages provided.

Awakenings mission is to provide survivors of sexual violence with a trauma informed, inclusive, art-making experience that encourages healing.
