The Art Institute of Chicago’s Leadership Advisory Committee (LAC), a group that provides counsel, fresh perspective, and support to the museum on all matters related to the engagement and advancement of the African American community in the life of the institution, will present the 2022 Legends and Legacy Award to iconic Chicago artist Richard Hunt. The Legends and Legacy Award celebrates living African American artists who, through their lifelong accomplishments and exceptional career in the visual arts, have influenced the next generation of artists.

The evening will include a lecture by the artist in Rubloff Auditorium on his life’s work, followed by a cocktail reception in Griffin Court and Pritzker Garden. Sculptures by Richard Hunt will be on view in the Modern Wing galleries, giving you the chance to experience his extraordinary works in person. This ceremony and celebration will offer an unforgettable chance to honor Chicago’s most prolific and accomplished sculptor.

About the Artist

Richard Hunt is a legendary Chicago artist and one of the most important sculptors of our time. Raised in Chicago, Hunt graduated from the School of the Art Institute in 1957, and in 1958 his work Hero Construction was acquired by the museum. Today that work is prominently displayed on the Woman’s Board Grand Staircase. Over 150 of Hunt’s public sculptures can be found throughout the United States and abroad, but his studio practice remains firmly grounded in Chicago. Working out of a repurposed Chicago Railway Systems electrical substation built in 1909, he has space to be able to continuously create both towering sculptures and more intimate constructions. Hunt’s sculptures were recently featured in the Art Institute exhibition Richard Hunt: Scholar’s Rock or Stone of Hope or Love of Bronze.

Individual tickets are now on sale for $175. Student tickets are also available for $25. Student tickets are valid for the program portion of the evening only.

Please note that this is an in-person event that takes place at the museum. Please use the Columbus Drive entrance, located at 230 S. Columbus Drive. Valet parking will be available. In accordance with state and City of Chicago guidelines, visitors to the museum are no longer required to wear masks or provide proof of vaccination.
