Micaela Felix: Conditional Beauty

@ The Martin

2500 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Opening Friday, February 11th, from 6PM - 9PM

On view through Saturday, February 26th

Join us for the opening reception of Micaela Felix’s CONDITIONAL BEAUTY, her first solo show in Chicago!

Micaela Felix is an emerging contemporary painter, whose work embraces both representational and abstract elements in colorful depictions of figures. Felix was born in Chicago and attends Columbia College Chicago. Her painted works, which feature abstracted images of human forms, often engage in rich colors and animated brushstrokes. Her works draw on the legacies of Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell and many Abstract Expressionist artists.

About the show, from the artist: Society demands standards of beauty that are often unattainable and unrealistic. Beauty is also subjective and idiosyncratic. Beauty has more to do with individuality and personality.

Through this feminist perspective of individuated beauty, I explore beauty through the conversation between color and texture. By using the movement of my body, I employ a personal vocabulary of organic mark-making, utilizing fluid imagery, mixed mediums and color to express nuance. I contextualize my movement with the use of chalk, crayon, marker, and acrylic paint. The build up of these materials illicit exploration of what beauty could be.

Micaela’s work will be on display in the back room of The Martin, sharing an exhibition period with Nashville fiber artist, Anna McKeown’s show STAND UP in the front room.

Both will celebrate a closing reception of their shows on February 26th.

Proof of vaccination is required for entry. All guests must be masked while in the space. A card-only bar will be available for purchase.

We recommend pairing your visit to the exhibition with dinner at Split-Rail and a post-exhibition cocktail in our basement lounge, Dorothy.
