Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Paper Cut Arts

@ Spudnik Press Cooperative

Online

Opening Wednesday, July 21st, from 7PM - 9PM

This July, our Drink & Draw projects dedicated to all the leftover fragments, or “chads”. First, we’ll put to use all the excess bits and pieces from other projects. Then, we’ll replenish our paper remnants by trying out the art of papercutting.

Guest Artist: Yang Pulongbarit-Cuevo

The art of paper cutting has been practiced around the globe for over a thousand years, from the Philippines to Mexico to Switzerland. The art form is recognized for its intricate designs and illustrations cut from a single sheet of paper.

Yang Pulongbarit-Cuevo has been cutting paper for many years and is best known for her intricate maps and personalized text-based designs. Yang will share some of her favorite projects in order to help us design our own image using only the positive and negative space of a single sheet of paper.

We will practice some basic knife skills with an introductory project. Then everyone will move on to create a greeting card, an ornament, or a mini poster. After getting comfortable with the process, Yang will demonstrate a variety of ways to build images with multiple layers, mount your creation, and use a background color to give your design some attitude.

For the printmakers in our midst, these hand cut artworks can double as a stencil for screen printing, pressure printing, and risography!

Suggested Materials:
+ Pencil and eraser
+ Sturdy paper* (multiple colors preferred)
+ Cutting mat (or other board you can cut on)
+ x-acto knife
+ Tape, preferably double sided foam tape
+ board or thick paper for mounting onto (old prints can work great!)

*Standard or thin paper will work better than heavy paper like bristol board.

Optional Materials:
+ Glue or modge podge (if tape not available)
+ Blank greeting card
+ Twine or string to make an ornament
