“We Who Feel Differently”
Lecture and Screening
Gallery 400 Lecture Room

Carlos Motta (born 1978) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work draws upon political history in an attempt to create counter narratives that recognize the inclusion of suppressed histories, communities, and identities. Motta presents We Who Feel Differently, a multi-part project that explores the idea of sexual and gender “difference” after four decades of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, Queer, and Questioning politics. Through exhibitions and a series of discursive events, the project seeks to invigorate discussion around a queer “We” that looks beyond tolerance or assimilation toward a concept of equality that provides for greater personal freedom. The project draws from Motta’s evolving database documentary http://wewhofeeldifferently.info/, which proposes “difference” as a profound mode of possibility for both solidarity and self-determination. An exhibition of We Who Feel Differently is on view at the New Museum in New York through September 9, 2012.

Motta’s work has been shown internationally in venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, New York; MoMA/PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, Bogotá; Serralves Museum, Porto, Portugal; the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens; CCS Bard Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; the San Francisco Art Institute; and Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin. Motta was named a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and has received grants from Art Matters and the Creative Capital Foundation. He is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program and is part of the faculty at Parsons The New School of Design and the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College.
