Poetry & Biscuits, the salon-style Chicago reading series has returned with the goal of creating community and conversation about poetry and the world today. . . . only now you have to bring your own biscuits. Every other month, the series, curated by Carrie Olivia Adams and Fred Schmalz in partnership with Black Ocean, features poets in dialogue, not only sharing their work, but their questions, ideas, and observations. Our hope is to make this more than just one more Zoom meeting, but a casual gathering of poetry-minded friends.
This February, please join us for BYOBicuits with Andrew Zawacki, Sawako Nakayasu, Joshua Harmon, and Paige Ackerson-Kiely.
Andrew Zawacki is the author of five books of poetry: Unsun : f/11, Videotape, Petals of Zero Petals of One, Anabranch, and By Reason of Breakings. His many chapbooks include Waterfall plot, Sonnensonnets, Kaeshi-waza, Arrow’s shadow, Georgia, and Glassscape. He is a professor at the University of Georgia.
Sawako Nakayasu is an artist working with language, performance, and translation—separately and in various combinations. She has lived mostly in the US and Japan, briefly in France and China, and translates from Japanese. Her books include Some Girls Walk Into The Country They Are From, Pink Waves, The Ants, and the translation of The Collected Poems of Chika Sagawa, as well as Mouth: Eats Color—Sagawa Chika Translations, Anti-translations, & Originals, a multilingual work of both original and translated poetry. She is co-editor, with Eric Selland, of an anthology of 20th Century Japanese Poetry. She teaches at Brown University.
Joshua Harmon is the author of six books of poetry, nonfiction, and fiction, including most recently The Soft Path. His chapbook Outtakes, B-Sides, & Demos won the 2019 Paul Bowles Award. He lives in western Massachusetts.
Paige Ackerson-Kiely is the author of Dolefully, A Rampart Stands, In No One’s Land and My Love is a Dead Arctic Explorer. She is the interim director of the MFA Writing Program at Sarah Lawrence and lives in Peekskill, New York.
