THE WILD GOOSE LAKE delivers a neo-noir kick with atmosphere thick with mystery as director Diao (BLACK COAL, THIN ICE) conjures up bristling tension in a style that might be dubbed action impressionism. Unreeling in flashback, the story takes a wanted man back in time to a cop-shooting and the perilous beginning of his troubles. Torrents of rain fall in the streets as two strangers, a man on the run and a part-time prostitute, meet under a viaduct. In a hotel basement, a meeting of rival gang members devolves into a violent melee over a scheme to divvy up territories and launch âthe Olympic games of theft.â Studded with detail and vivid characterizations, the subplots are slow-burning red herrings punctuated by bizarre action set-pieces, adrenaline-driven scenarios, and novelty kills, as a series of convoluted chases become the story, racing through the anonymous maze-like alleys of Wuhan in murky light. In Mandarin with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
