The South Pole Telescope, located in Antarctica, provides the best location on Earth to explore fine-scale cosmic wave background temperature and polarization anisotropy in a quest to explore the nature of dark energy, the energy scale of inflation and the mass of the neutrino. It looks at the nature of the first stars, galaxies, and the growth of cosmic structures. The location, constant sun, and cold air allows for unprecedented high-resolution images.

Dr. Brad Benson is a senior member of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago and a research scientist at Fermilab. He heads up the Benson Lab at the University of Chicago.
