The space will open at 1pm as we gather, mingle, and enjoy an offering of small bites (FCFS), reading to begin by 2pm and program will conclude at 3pm. Program is presented in conversation with Zehra Khan: Fakeries – Exhibition Opening.

Let’s Meet the Writers:

Maya Marshall is the author of the chapbook, Secondhand (Dancing Girl Press, 2016). She is cofounder of underbellymag.com, the journal on the practical magic of poetic revision. Marshall has earned fellowships from MacDowell, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, Cave Canem, the Community of Writers, and The Watering Hole. She has served as a senior editor for [PANK] and works as a manuscript editor at Haymarket Books. Her poems have appeared in RHINO, Potomac Review, Blackbird, and elsewhere. Marshall’s poems have recently been selected for Best New Poets 2019 (University of Virginia Press) and have received a Pushcart nomination.

Ada Cheng is a professor-turned-storyteller, solo performer, and storytelling show producer. She is the producer and the host of four storytelling shows, including Pour One Out, Am I Man Enough?, Talk Stories: An Asian American/Asian Diaspora Storytelling Show, and Speaking Truths Series. She creates platforms for people to tell difficult and vulnerable stories as well as spaces for people and communities who may not have opportunities otherwise. Her interests span multiple fields, including academia, storytelling/performance art, and advocacy. Her motto: Make your life the best story you tell.

Natasha Mijares is an artist, writer, curator, and educator. She received her MFA in Writing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited at various international and national galleries. She has been published in Container, Vinyl Poetry, The Gravity of the Thing, and other venues.

Marya Spont-Lemus is a fiction writer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator, whose life is made meaningful by being a mentor/mentee/collaborator to many and a pain in the neck to others. As a fiction writer, she credits the deep, supportive relationships developed through informal writers’ groups as giving her the confidence to invest in and share her own work. Marya is a resident of McKinley Park on Chicago’s Southwest side, and is currently at work on her first novel.
