I have to go to my book club tonight! He’s recording a podcast tomorrow! I got first prize at pickleball! Let’s hit the craft fair! My roommate accidentally composted my sourdough starter! Honk if you love estate sales! Have you tried taking more baths?
The hobbies of my snake are numerous is a fabric, clay, and poetry show about leisure, discipline, habits, and relaxation. In a series of tabletop sculptures, Marlo Koch speaks to a bouncing around, a switching between, and a penchant for snakes, radio shows, film screenings, bathtubs, tiny poems, secret clubs, and book fairs. Koch’s sets/playspaces/maquettes give form to the poetry of the phenomenon of trying to be as productive as possible while also trying to do more self-care than the person in the apartment next to you.
Marlo Koch is an artist and writer working in Chicago. She holds an MFA from the University of Illinois-Chicago. She was an artist in residence at the Wassaic Project in 2019, and curated exhibitions for Iceberg Projects and Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection. She has shown work or performed at Chicago Artist Coalition, Roman Susan, Silent Funny, Lillstreet Art Center, Chase Public, Ralph Arnold Gallery, The Nightingale Theatre, Mana Contemporary, Gallery 400, and others. Poems of hers are forthcoming from Sobotka Literary Magazine and Peach Mag.
