The National Museum of Mexican Art is pleased to invite you to the opening reception for Woven: Connections and Meanings on Friday, October 25th from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
Woven: Connections and Meanings includes the work of five contemporary Mexican and Mexican American women artists who have undertaken an age-old utilitarian tradition, sacred yet in many occasions undervalued. These artists now weave fresh narratives that address the US-Mexico border, immigration, identity, environment, materiality and resistance. Tanya Aguiñiga, Florencia Guillén, Consuelo Jimenez Underwood, Marta Palau and Georgina Valverde are compelling and dynamic voices that connect the practice of textile art with concepts of social justice and activism.
Woven: Connections and Meanings muestra el trabajo de cinco mujeres artistas contemporáneas mexicanas y mexicoamericanas que toman una tradición ancestral utilitaria, sagrada y en muchas ocasiones poco valorada para crear narrativas nuevas en donde hablan sobre la frontera México-EE.UU., inmigración, identidad, medio ambiente, materialidad y resistencia. Tanya Aguiñiga, Florencia Guillén, Consuelo Jimenez Underwood, Marta Palau y Georgina Valverde son voces potentes y dinámicas que conectan la práctica del arte textil con conceptos de justicia social y activismo.
